Parent Resources
Senior year brings big decisions, and it can be just as stressful for parents as it is for students.
Some Advice . . .
Be a Guide, Not the Driver.
Let your child lead the process. Offer reminders, ask questions, but avoid filling out applications or writing essays.
Help with Organization.
Encourage the use of a system that works for your child to meet deadlines (applications, financial aid, scholarships, testing). Here’s a template to help develop one.
Talk About Finances Early.
Be upfront about what the family can realistically afford. Use net price calculators on college websites to estimate costs.
Visit (or Explore) Colleges Together.
Campus tours, virtual visits, and information sessions help students imagine themselves in different environments.
Normalize the Stress.
Reassure your student that the process is competitive for everyone and that there are many great schools where they can thrive.
Encourage Self-Reflection.
Instead of “Where do you want to go?” ask questions like “What kind of environment helps you succeed?” or “What do you hope to explore in college?”
Celebrate Milestones.
Completing an essay draft, submitting an application,
or receiving an acceptance—each step is worth
acknowledging.
Stay Balanced.
Remind your child that who they ARE matters MORE than where they go. Success is possible at many different colleges.
